Habits are Hard to Start

Every day I think about what to write in this blog. Most days I write a little here and a little there, but rarely enough to post. I have several half written posts that must post one day. Blogging works better when a writer isn't so wordy. I'm not that writer most of the time.

Blogging is a habit that is much harder than I thought to get started.

A lot of the time, we think of habits that we hope to break rather than thinking of habits that we hope to start. But starting and maintaining good habits is often as important as breaking the bad ones. In fact, having good habits often helps to break the bad ones.

When I counsel people on debt, one of the steps we take in eliminating personal debt is to immediately open a savings account. Why? Doesn't it seem like a better idea to take all the money you have available and pay off interest building debt before saving money that earns less interest than you are paying on that aforementioned debt? It does seem like it. But the problem with having a problem with debt is not the debt itself; the problem is the bad financial habits one has that led the person into the debts. So, its not enough to simply pay off the debt because the person will just get back into debt later. You must pay off debt and develop good habits with money at the same time. So, when the debt is paid off, the habits that led there have changed too.

So, developing a habit to blog, to communicate via this medium regularly - something has to go or change. That's hard. I'm working on that.
